Best mods for $1,000

I am about to buy a '90 RS and after everythinf is done I should have around 1,000$ for mods on this car (its all bone stock). My quesstion is what are the best PERMANENT mods (I'm not looking at "for now" mods). I am thinking a muffler, a better intake, air filter, and some suspension work maybe? What are your opinions?

Thx in advance for the help

Which engine does it have?

If it is a V6 - save your money up for a complete drivetrain swap to a V8

If it is a TBI 5.0 - save your money for a 5.7 (or bigger ) TPI or carbed swap

If you must do something right now to it, to fulfill some internal desire, and you have the TBI 305, a catback and headers will work on any Small Block Chev engine that you may end up throwing in later, so I would go with that stuff - just make sure you get a nice 3" intermediate pipe with the catback kit. Gut that converter while you're at it......... Than you'll have a nice sounding exhaust system even if it isn't very fast - yet .

my $.02

if you are buying or just bought a RS, why dont/didnt you use the extra cash you have for a Z-28? you'll be far ahead of where you are now without having to do anything

------------------
  • 83 Z28--ttops, 200k miles--very ragged out. sold, thank goodness
  • 74 Z28--slightly modded 383, TH400 tranny, not too quick but fun to drive

Guys, lets get real now...the guy is going to buy the RS because he likes it. I would believe that a good exhaust from engine back with the Ultimate TBI mods in the tech articles section should tide you over for a little bit. As for manifolds, etc. There was a post a while ago about this and running dual TB's like people run dual carbs. But i don't remember the exact details so you'll have to search for it. Those should definitly make you happy for a little while then you'll have to goto Modder's Anonymous for some help with your modding impulse.

------------------
89 IROC-Z 350 TPI

-Flowmaster Catback
-Performance Resource Chip
-700R4 (Rebuilt) Too much done to actually list
-K&N Airfilters
-Ported Plenum
-2.77 Gears (not much to brag about but eh, its there)
-MSD 8.5 mm plug wires
-Gutted cat
-!AIR
-Gutted Air Boxes

The reason I got an RS is it costs less (I'm a student), insurance costs less, better MPG, and that I couldn't find a decent Z/28 in my are .

Thx branz28, I'll take a look at that article and hope it helps me out
