distributor

I cant get my distributor to sit flush when i put it back in, there is a small gap between the block and the collar on the distributor. I find that its only going in one way but wont mate all the way, any ideas?

The distributor drives the oil pump. The oil pump shaft has a slot in the top to mate with the distributor shaft.

Stick a large screwdriver down the hole (when the distributor is out, of course), turn the oil pump shaft slightly, try again. Repeat until the distributor drops into place.

Ok i got it in, didnt have to do what you guys said I should do, anyhow i didnt mark it when i took it out as I saw 1 mark already, the rotar wasnt matched with the base though. Anyhow, it only went in either 2 ways, far left or far right, no in between, im guessing that i will need my timing adjusted at the shop.

what you need to do is crank the engine over to TDC on compression stroke for #1, and then restab the distributor with the rotor at #1 plug terminal on the dist. cap. If you dont, it wont run. At least not very good.

You could only do that because you didn't do what the Kid told you to do. The oil pump shaft will move as the dist. gear disengages the cam gear. Have to line everything up for them to mesh. I'll bet your timing is WAY off now.
