i need help on compatability of parts for new and old sbc
i need help on compatability of parts for new and old sbc
Well what i want to now is the difference between a old style 2 piece seal small block and an 87 and up block.
If i had a 383 short block built on a one piece seal block would the trickflow head packages work, why or why not.
I would have got a link to summits site but i couldnt find the things on there site but they are on page 141 in summits catolog, maybe try trickflows site.
The one i was interested in is the 465 hp hydraulic roller part# tfs-k314-465-450.
Well anyway i think this would work because it doesnt come with lifters so i would get new style lifters and whatever length pushrods, and everything else should bolt up.
One other quick question, if i had flat top pistons at -7cc would the 72cc heads give me 10:1 compression to run pump gas.
Thanks for any replies

diff between 1 piece rear main and 2 piece:
the oil pan is diffrent because of the rear seal
the rear seal itself
the cranks flywheel pattern is diffrent. the balancer is the same. the stroke doesnt change (unless you have a stroker crank)
thats all that changed in the bottom end.
around the same time they went to one piece rear main, they also added the provisions for the factory roller cams. also around that time (87ish) they started using centerbolt valve covers.
obviously if you swap heads you use whatever covers fit the heads you're using... they're interchangable.
cams swap without issue too.. id reccomend aftermarket rollers, but if the provisions are cast into your block, you can use the factory setup..

If you need more info on what can swap back and forth, and can't get to a source like this quickly, you can get a book called "GM parts interchange manual" or something... I got one at the local bookstore...
thank you
So what you are saying is swaping cams isnt an issue so what about the timing set would there be any issues there.
Also you said they changed to one piece and the roller setup at about the same time 87 ish so are there one piece seal blocks without the factory roller setup or the other way around.
I found the kits im talking about right here
im looking at TFS-K314-465-450
so what i need to know is would this work with a 87 or newer block

Yes. There is a difference. Because the 87-up's got the factory roller cam, they in turn got a factory roller designed timing set. The difference lies in where the cam bolts to the gear. Aside from being different diameters (the factory roller blocks have a small step ground into them to accomodate the factory camshaft retainer plate), the factory rollers cam bolts are closer spaced. Meaning, it won't even bolt up to the pre-roller block cams.
That kit looks like the retro-fit design. It should work. (Hey, the pre-vortec trucks got roller blocks but flat tappet cams, didnt they?)

the cam bearings and dimentions are the same with the exception of the cam timing chain gears bolt pattern.
because of the stepped nose of the roller cam (required for the cam retention plate) the roller cam has a smaller bolt pattern.
so there are standard/flat tappet/prefactory roller cams that have the "big" bolt pattern, and there are factory roller cams that have the smaller pattern.
as far as the block, the diff between the factory roller block and a standard small block:
lifter bore heights.
roller block has bosses cast for the "spider" to screw into.
roller block has bosses cast for the cam retention plate.
the trucks did not get the roller cam until the early 90s, but sometimes they have the bosses in them. usually the bosses are there, but not tapped...
the kit you posted does not come with lifters. thats ok. get some aftermarket roller lifters. they drop right in. use the pushrod length reccomend by your lifter maker...
you do not have to have a roller block to run a roller cam. you just use a cam button to hold the cam from walking forward, and the cam gear keeps it from going backwards.. just like stock flat tappets. you just have to make up for the thickness of the cam retention plate by running a spacer.
