350 or 383?

I am thinking about building an engine and then finding a thirdgen to put it in. I'm wondering what is better for a thirdgen application. I know that the 383 is a torque monster, but then is it limited up top? Is there a significant cost difference between building the two of them? I'm aiming for a strret car that I can run on the track, and don't know how realistic it is, but I'd also like to be able to run 11's in the quarter. So which motor would you choose for this and why?

i'd go with the 383 you cna make alot more power. they make good kits for it. remeber thiers no replacemnt for dispalcement. and you can have a high reving 383 it all depends on how you build it. it's gonna eb a lil more costly yes. but you'll be able to run the 11's easyer. 450 out of a mild 383 is good. my firends is just a cast parts in a kit pushing 450 dyno was like 446 or something so it's a nice engien. good pair of heads proted. good valuve train. and good cam you'll be set. i say 383

i have to agree unless your going with juice or turbo go with the 383 itll be easier to aquire that 1/4 mi. goal in the end . not that you cant go either on the 383 itll just be easier to acquire the n/a engine and times with a 383 over a 350 in the end

definatly go with the 383

Im thinking about rebuilding my motor in about 2 or 3 years but I also wanted to install a supercharger and a little shot of NOS but what is better to stick with 350 or bump up to a 383? I wanna keep the same fuelinjection and keep the car looking stock kinda like that sleeper look  Thanks for any advice you can give me.

That is and entirely false statement, unless we are talking about the same parts in each engine with the only difference being the crank stroke. It all depends upon how the engine is built and what part are used.

Good question... one I'm pondering myself.

i'm gonna be buiding a 383 tt. so i'm kinda biast. but thier are really cool things you can do. 383 350 same black diffren't bore. just use the parts you want the app. to be for.such as a higher reving motor. use diffren't values and springs and heads. with a nice cam. and you'll be good. thier also more to it then that of course. but i'm just saying thiers no replacement for dispacment. i would tt a 572 but not enough doe$$

no. not form what i've read tlaked abotu and herd form some buddys of myn. but rember these are just buddys. and i've done some digging of my own. but all it came down to is just build a low comperssion. thats about it. which would be flat top pistons. a bigger combotion chamber head. so on. then get some piping costum fitted for you hair dryer and their you go. but thats the basic conecpt of it

I would definately go with a 383 or 406 SBC especially if you plan on driving it on the street. An 11 sec 406 will normally have better street manners than an 11 sec 355. The larger the displacement the less radical you have to get with your combination to achieve your 11 sec goal. It will cost slightly more to build a 383 or 406 but its worth the money.

Yep, a 383 is a "torque monster", especially with a "3/4 cam".

11's in the quarter requires a roll bar at an NHRA track. A nice convience on the street.

(Just an appeal to put down the magazines and pick up the rule book.)
