anyone ever have the ring gear on a flywheel replaced?

i have a 400SBC and a T56.... so i splurged and bought the $350 flywheel from centerforce.

for some stupid reason, (i should have known better) i used regular bolts to hold the starter on... (not the proper flywheel bolts.

well i ground part of my ring gear to crap.
now its a $350 POS.

my choices are:
1. buy a new 350 flywheel.
2. have a machine shop cut the old one off and press/weld a new ring gear on.
3. put some weld over the striped section and some of the bad teeth, then grind with my dremel and make teeth.

if it was just one tooth, id be more likely to try option3... but since theres a whole gouged out section, i donno.

$20 for a ring gear and under 100 for some machine work sounds better then $350 for a new flywheel.....

no matter how you look at it though, the situation sucks.

Yes it is rather easy to do. Used to be pretty commonplace.

Cut the old ring gear in half with a cutoff wheel or something to remove it.

Freeze the flywheel and heat the ring gear with a torch, and shrink it on.

i know on my flexplates its welded on with some short 1/2" long beads at various places around it...

i dont recall on the flywheel, but is it welded at all? or just a press fit?

Just a press fit on flywheels, no welds.

It's not really practical to replace them on flex plates.
