Advanced auto parts Heads? Good or bad?
I was getting parts for my 72 Pontiac at advanced auto parts and I saw a display about engine blocks and heads, so I asked about the heads, being mine are smoking bad. I was told that 305 heads are like $200 something dollars, which is pretty decent price. I am just trying to get this camaro "streetable" on a budget. Should I get these or keep looking at the hi-performance heads?
Also, I was told 305 heads on my 350 engine would raise compression, but was told by someone else that they would decrease power compared to 350 heads? Opinions?

Let me tell you something about Advanced Auto Parts. The motors and motor parts they sell are made by Recon one of the worst reman. engine builders there is. I work at O'Reilly auto Parts and in my 3 years of being there I found the best reman. engines and parts you can buy are made by RUSH. However O'Reilly's does not sell them but I am a firm beliver in them.

Yea reccon does a fairly crappy rebuild job but the heads should be fine. Most of the reccon problems are bottem end and a i've seen a few blown head gaskets but no sheled heads. The closed chamber 58cc "comonly found on 305" will kick your compression up dramaticly. The problem is the valves are generaly smaller and do not flow as well as lager 64cc&higher heads. Its possible to go from 10.$@.1 to 12.#$.1 "figuarative @#$%"
with the 58cc heads. I use the 58cc for all my engines they are a good base head that can be ported out to accomidate larger valves.
Pro's.
1. They increse compression!
2. A milder cam can be used with the same power results as a lager cam and bigger heads.
3. killer midrange power!
4. A lot more than im not going to get into at the moment
!
Con's
1. Gas is expensive! Higher compression equals higher octane fuel "THAT MUST BE USED"
2. You must constantly fine tune your timing.
Crappy gas.
3.They do not flow as well in low rmps.Unless opend up" bigger valves.
4. yadda yadda yadda.
well unless your willing to deal with the problems you will encounter its probably best to go with the 64cc. WORLD products has some cast heads completly assembled for 400$
