Fuel pump...what do you recommend?

Im putting my carb 383 in this winter and i was wondering, which is better to use, mechanical or electrical such as holley blue or red?
I would really like to use a mechanical, but is this harder?
Is there a how-to on installing either of these with a carb. motor?

Mechanical. Dont make life more difficult than it already is. Look for one that wont need a regulator. I have had lots of luck with carters. If the engine is making 425 or less +/- 20 hp you can probably get by with a stock mechanical. I knew a guy that dynoed 435 (or so, i dont remember exactly, it was in the 430's though) and he was running a stock replacement pump from autozone.

Yup, go mechanical. That just means you got one less thing to worry about and/or screw around with.

This isnt exactly a how to, but I can tell you how I did it. I took the metal lines off at the tank, rebent them (takes a compression fitting too, at least I did) and move them to the passenger side. There are holes all the way down, just take the clips from the drivers side, and move it to the passenger side. Then it will work perfectly for the passenger side mounted mechanical pump. Also, I know people that bend the metal line, and go over the trans in the trans tunnel, and come out that way, that works great too, Other people run the fuel line around the engine, and keep it on the drivers side. Just run it from the line around the engine to the fuel pump. Personally I dont like this, but thats just me. It adds clutter and leaves more fuel line in the engine compartment.

What carb are you using?

If it is a QJet I would recommend getting a Carter high volume that runs at 6 psi (not the 8 psi). This is good for the QJet because it doesn't like high pressure but likes volume, due to its small fuel bowl.

My built 305 seems to be taxing my stock fuel pump and I'm going to be changing to this pump fairly soon.

Really? Like I said above, I have seen alot of 400+ hp engines running on stock pumps. Without a problem. IS it just an old pump?

I just installed a Walbro 255 in tank pump from Racetronix with the full harness they have.....excellent quality btw......she'll be feeding a 383 as well making 523hp. It's not the easiest job in the world, but while the tank was out I was able to throw some Por 15 on it too.
