Oil leak, need your opinion please...

My '92 is leaking oil real bad. It leaves an oil spot about 5 inches wide. I got under the car to check it out. It appears to be coming from between the engine & tranny. My dad said it could be the rear main seal. (the one between the engine & tranny. i think that's what's called) I called a trusted tranny shop in town and they told me the same thing. But he also said that if the crankshaft had too much endplay, it would keep leaking even if i replaced the seal. (car has 140K miles) Is this a true? If so, how would I correct the endplay? Would I have to rebuild the engine? If did, would it be better to drop in a 350 instead of investing in the 305? I'd appreciate any input from anyone. Thanks in advance for your help. Later...

might check your oil pressure sending unit...it could be leaking. not likely but easier to fix than rear main seal.
should be near the firewall behind the intake ontop of the block.

Just to narrow things down....Have you removed the valve covers at any time?

Oil will collect near the rear of the heads since our engines tilt backwards ever so slightly, and if the valve covers are not sealed correctly, this can cause a leak that seems like a rear seal.

Just an idea is all. If you didn't remove the covers, or no one else has, then disregard this post.

If it is leaking Back there, Odds are its the Rear main, Or the rear oilpan Seal.

Either Way, the Motor Has to Be pulled to Fix it.

If the crank has to much endplay, Then It could Continue to leak even after replacing, and You Will be Looking at a rebuild.

At wich point, there is No reason To rebuild the 305 when For 150$ You can pull a Longblock 350 or 400 out of the Local Pick N Pull.

Thanks guys. Bort62, your suggestion brings me to another question. If I get a LB 350, can I just swap the 305's accessories over? Or would I have to get new stuff? What can I keep, and what do I need to get? I'm saving my money for either an LT1/6speed or an LS1/speed combo. Should I keep saving and pouring oil, or get a LB 350? What do you guys think of my future plan? Any input is greatly appreciated. Again, thanks for your help!

everything on the 305 will work on a 350. only exception may be if you have tpi, then the injectors are different.

On my 91 chevy p/u i thought my rear main was leaking to and when i pulled the tranny to swap the clutch out i noticed it was the back of the valve covers leaking, the leak drifted right to the middle of the back of the block right down the rear main. But the valve covers were never removed...200k so, looks are decieving, change your valve cover gaskets first before you get excited with a 350..unless of coarse you just flat out dont want the 305 anyways
