Same old question - what heads and cam upgrade?
I know this has been dialogued to death but I cannot see a clear path yet and needed to ask.
I am not trying to reinvent something here - I am looking for a good reliable set up that will make a decent amount of HP. By that I mean something like 400 or a little better at the flywheel.
I talked to TPIS about this and they can basically put everything together from their experience and send it to me for several thousand dollars. Wow for the money they want I could buy a new crate engine! The AFR heads are $1900 by themselves!
My engine is the basic stock L98 with headers and flowmasters along with an AFPR and CAI.
What would the best head - cam - springs - rocker combination I could get for around $2000? I realize a miniram and the rest of the parts or going to be more.
This is not going to be a drag car. Just a street car that could run mid 12s if possible and be taken on the highway for the weekend if needed.
Then there is the whole aluminum verses Iron debate. And then the size of heads and and cam.
I talked to a guy today who sells Dart eagle iron heads (180cc). With comp cam hydrolic roller cam (08-432-8 extreme energy). Also with comp cams rockers 1.5 and springs was going to be about $1300 with the heads included. Any thoughts on that?
I am studying but as much as I can but any help at all would be great.

With any head/cam upgrade you need to do somthing about the tpi to get the most out of your money. If your willing to wait a few months you could save yourself some by getting vortec heads and the long awaited vortec HSR. For the cam, if you can scan your car and burn your own chips get one with about 215-220 degrees of intake duration.

Thanks for the reply. I did not know about the HSR vortech head situation. I am still not sure about the HSR due to cutting my hood for clearance unless that is somehow going to be addressed in this next design.
I also realize the need for a new prom. I called Fast chips in Tulsa - they said for about $500 they will put the car on the dyno and tune it all day until it is right. THey are close enough for me to do that. The option of burning is good to but there will be a learning curve for sure.
I have read that the vortech heads are more like truck heads and that other options are better. Has the opinion changed?

Price, flow, material, overall quality.
It's an automotive industry. This is a prime example of "you get what you pay for."
AFR flows better per comparable port size. Bottom line.

I am thining of the AFR 195 heads. I saw them at JDs for about $1273. I do not understand the differnce between the competion head and the street head - except for a large price differnce. What head do I need here? Any cam suggestions?
Here is the thread for the heads I am looking at.
