I finally picked up the 350 from my friend. He got it from the Chevy dealer we work at. Definitely needs rebuild, but Im strokin it so I dont mind that. But, he told me that they were stock Vortec heads. When I looked closer when I got it home, I noticed that they weren't center bolt VCs. The only castings I could find were 14079281 A236. I searched for both of these numbers on here, and yielded nothing. Anyone know WTF heads these are? He's got no idea what the motor came out of. All we know is that it's a 350.

BTW: Its got an opening on the side for a mechanical fuel pump. Can that tell me anything? I thought they only used mech. FP in earlier SBC?

You miss read it.

14079287...350...86-90.......Truck

Since you didn't post a heads casting number i'm not sure but they are probably trash heads, like all other truck heads (pre vortec), don't use them.

Definitly not vortecs. Your friend lied or doesn't have a clue.

I thought that was the head casting number? Those were the only 2 numbers I found on the heads.

I think what Leigh is saying is that you miss-read the casting number. Yes, the first number you posted is indeed the casting number, however, on things that old, numbers can take the form of other numbers and become very misleading. For example, the "1" (last digit of the cast numb) may have looked like a 1, but it's indeed a 7.

Stock Vortec truck heads, of the 350 form, end in either "906" or "062". Neither of which yours is.

As for the pump, just because a block has a port for one does not mean it indeed uses one. GM isn't going to change the way they machine blocks just because an engine is EFI. They just slap a block off plate over it.

Ewwww - unless they're 86 Vette L98 heads, which I don't know off the top of my head.

Dispose of them otherwise.

But, a block is a block is a block is a block; so as long as it's workable, start there.

No the casting number you gave was a block casting number not a head.

Or it could be this one, either way they are block numbers.

Actually, I already did. Its sayin its a block casting, but it doesnt list it as a head casting. Im 100% sure that its the head casting, and not the block casting. Ill make sure there isnt another number on the heads tomorrow, but those were the only 2 I saw.

Did you pull the valve cover and look at the number that's on/in the head?

Ya, all I saw were those 2 numbers. Nothing else other than the GM stamp.

I think we should dispense with the heads/block confusion....

The number I posted is a head #. At least, it came from the "Heads" section. Now maybe they slipped and put a block in with the heads; but I kind of doubt it.
