Fuel pump?
Engine back fires at times while trying to accelerate mainly while at low speed or from a stop especially when cold. But can happen when engine is hot also. other times once engine is warm accelerates without hesitation. Mechanic said fuel pressure was very low and that fuel pump needed to be replaced to start with but that the problem could be the pressure regulator? 1992 rs 6 cyl 138,000 miles new cap, rotor, wires, plugs, fuel filter.air filter. Can the pump have intermitent problems and cause this or does it sound like a contact problem with wires? Or something else? Any suggestions? Please and thank you for any insight. Engine pulls no codes.

What is the fuel pressure? I would start with the FPR before I even considered changing the pump, much cheaper and easier/faster to do.

Don't take this the wrong way. If you've got a mechanic working on it, that implies you don't work on it yourself. What exactly are you going to do with the answers you get here?
If you have to provide mechanical info to your mechanic, he's not the guy you want working on it.
If you're going to start wrenching on your car yourself, that's great. Get a fuel pressure gauge, do a search in the V6 forum to see what fuel pressure should be, and go see what yours has.
