You will never do an LS1 swap and have it ready as a DD for under $6k. You are better off with the fast burn 385 since everything you car has on it now will bolt up to it. The LS1 would make for a far better DD but it comes at a cost.

if you what 12's for less, the ZZ385FB is a good choice (easier to install)
The LS-1 is more involved to install and will cost more. Probabily more than $5500 to finish.
There is a big difference between going 12's and going 11's. a 385 to 400hp motor will not get you 11's

If you want really 11's easily , Think Big Block. go with a hi performance 454 based Big block ...more involved than the ZZ385, less involved than a LS1 swap. Its easy to get 500+ street able hp out of a 468CI BBC.
A lot easier and cheaper, with better drivability than a SBC or a Ls-1
Can, be done for $5500 too.. but just.
None of these motors will be great on gas. If commuting back and forth to work is a priority the ZZ4 350 will probabily be the best of all of these.

California Emissions Compliance is a whole nother issue........ good luck

I wouldnt go with the big block. The car is already setup for a SBC, stay with that. Go with a SBC crate motor, or build your own. High 11s low 12s isnt that much of a goal, but you wont get it on all motor. You are going to need to spend almost as much replacing your trans, which you will destroy, then your rear. You will need lots of $$$ in suspension if you ever hope to come anywhere close to traction.
