just did the plugs cap rotor thing on my 305 tbi. went to reset and bump up the initial timing, no timing mark, no degree tab, nothing. where are they? there has to be something to use as a setting mark.

Lood almost straight down along th efront of the engine just to the driver's side of the water pump, kind of between the water pump and the power steering pump; there's a little round tube looking thing down in there, that's your timing mark.

yeah, I see that, so I assume that you can't use a standard timing light?

Mine has a timing tab right in front of that tube. The tube is a universal thing that some cars use for the ECM for timing. It holds a probe. I think techs use it for some diagnostic equipment too. Yours doesn't have the tab? It must have been removed for some reason. It should have some teeth on it. The closest to the little tube being 0 deg. and for every point, whether in or out, is 2 deg. progressively. I hope you find it. Otherwise you'll need to use just that tube and I can't imagine it'd be easy. Wish I could help more.

Yes you can use a standard timing light with the marks behind the water pump.
Clean the tab with some carb cleaner, there are timing marks there along with the tube.
