Instrument cluster rebuilding
I have an RS with all the usual inaccurate GM gauges- except now the speedo only works after driving a couple of miles. After you shut the car off and it cools it has to go a mile or two before it starts to work again.
I have lived with a fuel gauge that reads 1/4 when it's empty for some time, but the speedo is the last straw.
I don't want to waste my time with a junkyard cluster, and want to keep my same mileage etc.
There's one outfit in Ft.Lauderdale, FL that said depending on what has to be replaced it will be between $150 and $300.
This seems reasonable to me.
Does anyone else know of other places that I can mail the cluster to for this work?

I don't know of anyone else who'd rebuild them, and you said you don't want to go with a junkyard cluster, so there you have it. I guess you should go with the rebuild then, although I don't think it's worth it to spend $225 (average of $150 and $300
) for your stock ones when you could probably pick up some nice low mileage junkyard gauges for cheaper (or even a new aftermarket set for around that price), then stick the od. on a drill and spin the mileage up to where yours is at now if that bugs you.
Have you tried replacing the speedo cable? Those go bad and could mess up the speedo... you might want to try that first.

Have you been getting a check engine light with the code 24?

The check engine light hasn't come on but I'll check for a code 24 anyway. I'm going to try and log the thing while it's running if I can get my hands on a Diacom and that will show me VSS pulses. If so, the cluster is getting a signal so the problem's there.

The other question that comes to mind is... Have you removed the cluster to see if any of the connections are damaged? Is your heat on by any chance when the guages start working? I have seen a few GM dashes have to have some 'wiring' done to make them work correctly.

I had the panel out three years ago to install the check engine light bulb that had been "left out" of the panel before my wife (then girfriend) owned the car. Everything functioned speedo wise fine until recent months. The fuel gauge has always been screwy, though that may be a sender issue. We've lived with teh fuel gauge inacuracy but gotta have a speedo.
My plan is to verify I have VSS signal, then if so remove the panel, double check all the connections for tightness and corrosion. If it still does the same thing then I'll send it off. I shoudl buy a Helm manual to get a proper accurate chassis wiring diagram anyway.
Heat on or no heat it takes about two to three miles of driving for it to spring to life. Then it reads fine.
