Stuttering, weird performance

Okay so it's a Mustang, but I still need your help.

It's a 87 Ford Mustang GT 5.0l HO 5-speed.

Sometime it sputters, and jerks. It acts like a car does right before it stalls, except it never does. Also, problem has no relation to RPM, road speed, engine load, or gear.

Also, the spark on 4 of the wires is irregular. (I hooked it up to a timing light and it was pretty random.) I didn't bother testing the other four, I figured I'd get the same results.

I'm thinking this is a spark problem, and I've been telling her to get a new cap/rotor/plug wires. The spark plugs themselves look fine, although they're the (in my opinion BOsch platinum plus plugs with the 4 paths for the spark to travel.. I can't remember their name.... but you know what I'm talking about. heh.

On another note, just out of amusement.. One of the third brakelights was out, so I replaced it, and now neither of the third brakelights work. lol That's a Ford for ya'.

But anyways, I'd just like your opinions on my suggestion to go buy a new cap/rotor and plug wires before she actually does.

Not withstanding that it might be a cap/coil/rotor combo....if that doesn't solve it........ if it were a third gen car I would say the distributor pickup coil if it has one.
