manifold?

hey, my car has been overheating and runnning not as well. When i took the cap off the valve cover the oil smelt a lot like gasoline, and had a little bit of white film. Some of my friends threw around the idea of maybee my intake manifold having a crack internally or down in the valledy and everything is leaking. Im not exactly sure, but if ne one has had the same problem or know whats causing it pleas inform me. This is my daily driver.

If you can pull the valve cover and see white sludge, you have a bad intake seal. I f you can pull a spark plug and see an oily tip, you have a bad intake seal or bad rings. Thats easiest to start at.

white sludge in oil

It's quite simple; white sludge in oil, wherever it may be, is water in the oil! At least, you have a poor breather set-up, allowing moisture build up, to, at worst, cracked head, block, intake, head gasket leak..... Perform some leakdown /vacuum leak checks n try to narrow it down.

yea I have to agree with z92maroo, if you have any oil that has white streaks or looks like a "chocholate milkshake" you have water or antifreeze in the oil, you have to find out where it is comming from, DO NOT run the engine until you fix the problem, you will do permanate ans serious damage to your engine fast. the first place I'd look is the intake manifold gasket, some inexpreanced people will put permatex around the intake runners, the gas will slowly eat away at it (permatex IS NOT fuel proof) and it will travel all the way to the water crossovers, and the peressure in the crossover will blow out into the lifter vally, which will also allow gas to get into the oil as well giving it a gassy smell, that's why experanced mechanics will only put permatex around the water jackets, and leave the intake ports dry, the next place I'd look would be a head gasket, and the final place would be a cracked block or head, also I have never seen a intake manifold crack (dosen't mean it's not possable...), so I doubt that's the problem.

hmm ive been hearing a lot of stuff like that. ALOT of smoke does come out my breather, so that could have to do with it but i dont know how to fix that. Also a LOT of black smoke comes from my exhaust so i taught blow by syndrom but im not sure, would you guys know of ne thing to correlate with this or know wut it could be and it alwasy is always kicking up lots of black smoke and smelling rich no matter how i adjust the carb and fuel regualtor.

if you don't already own a vacume gauge now is the time to invest in one. you can tell alot from an engine learning how to read one. (ie, low or bouncing needle ect) this will help you to tell if you have an intake leak. also do a compression check will help you to determine if you have a blown head gasket. you can also pressure check the cooling system but it doesn't always detect a blown hg. it's a good idea to check the coolant to see if it's contaminated also. as for the carb, not really much you can do to tune it properly if you are dealing with a intake leak ect. good luck.
