Questions about milling Vortec heads for a 305...
1. How much must be milled off. (assuming .015 gaskets)
2. Do you run into any bolt on problems such as now that the heads are milled, the intake doesn't line up correctly.
3. About how much does the milling job cost.
Thanks for your help.

Yea, I saw that article in Car Craft. I believe they milled it down .045, and with using the .015 gasket, they got 10:1 compressions.
I wanted to stay with my orginal 9.5:1 compression, stock bottem end 305 engine. So I dont know how much to mill, what it would cost, or if I would have any problems lining up things.

Yeah I did this job but be careful the gaskets they call for is very thin and if you have any scaring on the Deck of the block you may have leaks........I lost a little compression however I got a better seal by using a standard gasket. The heads rock.....thats the truth

R.O.B., check out the World Products SR305 Torquer heads. Super Chevy put a set on a 305tpi and got a 51hp increase. There is an article in the new Camaro Performer mag that Super Chevy puts out. They baselined a 305tpi with the only mods being a roller cam of unknown specs and stock heads with a tripple angle valve job and got 215hp then swapped the heads out to the SR305Trq's and made 266hp. Pretty impresive in my book.

I couldn't tell from reading that article if the 51hp increase was from changing just the heads or both the heads and the cam at once. I reread it and i still couldn't tell.
Brian, did the intake line up with the heads after you had them milled? I've been planning on doing this for months now.

What intake are you going to use? A TPI intake won't line up to Vortec heads, the ports aren't the same.

Well, I agree the 305 torquer heads are decent, but by playing with my Dyno2000, using my TPI setup (hoping the intake will be available within the next year), ZZ4 cam, and my headers, the Vortec heads are worth 16 more poines @ 5500 rpm, and 7 more lbs of torque. Granted, 16/7 isn't much, but when you consider I wish to purchase a new aftermarket intake (could go regular or vortec patter, same price)and the cost of the heads are near the same, why not get the extra ponies. Only real dis-advantage is the EGR setup. Unless I'm seeing the wrong prices for the 305 torquer heads, why not to the Vortec swap.

Car Craft did a build up on a carbed 305 with Vortecs and got 325hp, then they put the Torquers on (but with a sligthly different intake) and made 296hp. Since my car won't pass visual anyway, i'm going with the Vortecs and i'm planning on getting them milled about .03" or .035" so that i could still used them on a 350 later on.
