Cooling Things Down......

Hello,
I've been reading all over these boards and have truly learned alot! Thanks!
I've noticed that cooling seems to be a big topic since our cars are known to run hot.
We have a 91 RS Convertible and have had our issues with engine temps. Here's a list of what I did and what the results are.

First I replaced the stock radiator with a 3 core radiator.
Then changed the water pump. (it needed a new one)
I also changed the thermostat and bought a 160° thermo.
From the advice of a mechanic I know well....
I use Havoline Antifreeze at a 50% mixture and added a bottle of WATERWETTER!!!!
Water wetter made a beliver out of me! Dropped my temp a good 30°!
Try doing a flush and use the havoline and the water wetter and I'll bet you will see results!
You can get the waterwetter at most large auto supply places and costs under $10 a bottle.

Our temp gauge is always at a hair above the 1st mark on the stock gauge while driving. In stop and go traffic it rarely gets beyond the halfway mark. A few minutes after we get going again the temp drops right back down. I've been using this system for a full year and a half and it does not affect the heating system during the winter.

We live in the desert and we have 110° days during the summer and 18° nights during the winter. So that is about as extreme as you can get.

My next step is to get a cooler temp switch like the ones made by JET and the others, but I have not decided as to which one to get.
I'm also thinking of adding a dual fan set-up just to see if I can get the temp to drop a wee bit more in the summer. And to get a little more airflow through the radiator.

Prior to doing the above changes our car ran hot all the time, and forget about climbing some of the mountains during the summer.
Now we can go where we want when we want without worries of it getting hot or possibly overheating.

I've used other antifreeze in the past and none of them cools like the havoline.
For those of you with minor heating problems I think it's well worth the $20 to buy a bottle of Havoline antifreeze and some water wetter.

The Havoline is in a black bottle and says Extended Life and DEX-COOL on it.
The Water Wetter is in a small clear bottle and the fluid is pink. Usually found in the additives isle.

I'm here to tell ya it's the best thing I've done to my cooling system!

Sun,

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has had a good experience with teh Dex Cool conversion. I'm running it in everything now 'cept the old Fieros and I have had no leaks, problems, or overheating. I used the wetter in an LT1 build that had trouble with heat rejection and it does make a difference.
