PIckup Coil in Dist.
Hey I was reading a post earlier about replacing a Pickup coil. How hard is it to do this job can it cause the computer to go haywire with the timing.......Mine jumps 6* BTDC to 12* BTDC at idle and it will not idle on its own......I have to hole the throttle blades open.
Thanks
Brian

Yes, I guess it could cause the timing to jump...actaully miss firing to cylinders at the wrong time.
To change, you need to pull the distributor.
Knock out the rollpin holding the gear on.
Whoops, first pull the stuff off that's under the cap (rotor, reluctor)
Then slide the shaft out, and you have access to the PU coil.
DO all cylinders timing jump around like that? And does it do it even woth the EST disconnected? I assume you have the EST disconnected when you notice the 6-12 change?
Have you verified there's no slop in the timing chain, distributor to cam gear mesh?

Car: yep
Engine: uhuh
Transmission: sure does
If the car won't idle due to a vac. leak or missfire, the timing will jump around as the idle jumps around.
Are you sure the jumpy timing is causing the bad idle, or is the bad idle causing the jumpy timing??
Sometimes its tough to tell.
