Questions about carbureted cars??

My friend has an 84 camaro z28, with a 305 and a 5 speed manual transmission. He wants to know which mods to make to his car first, He doesn't know much about cars, he just wants to make it faster, not an all out drag car just wants some more GGGOOOOOOOO! Plus I don't know anything about carburetors. I was wondering where i could get some info about them on the internet or reading materials. I know some things about them but want to learn more. Any info would help. Thanks.

My previous '86 TA was carb'd. First, check that the carb goes all of the way open when you mash on the pedal. Mine had alot of slop, and by modifying the cable, I gained a little bit. Also, I had good luck playing with the secondaries. There is a spring on the side of the carb that controls how fast the top butterflies open (under vacuum control that is), I adjust'd mine and it made a BIG improvement. Hope this helps you.
