What is this?

Piece that runs along the drive shaft that bolts to the tranny and then the rear axle??? I'm pulling the motor for a new one and was wondering if this thing was really needed when its time to put the new motor in?

That's the torque arm, and yes, you need to keep it installed. It's what keeps the whole rear axle assembly from moving vertically under acceleration/deceleration.

Without it, there wont be anything to provide the counter torque to keep the rear in one spot. The rear would try to spin around under power and probably rip the suspention apart and damage the D/S without it.
