Oil Around Timming Chain Cover

Oil Around Timming Chain Cover
Iwas looking under my car the block looked pretty dry exept one spot where the timming chain cover and the oil pan meet. there was a heavy sludge build up any idea's what this could mean.do i need new oil pan gasket or worse.thank's for any input

Clean it up with your favorite degreaser so you can get a good look at things then wait for it to leak and see exactly where it's coming from. If it's a slight leak and you can live with it then leave it alone. Could be the oil pan. timing cover, the seam in between them or the crank seal. Crank seal is fairly easy. Either of the other two means dropping the oil pan. Not a lot of fun with the engine in the car.

dropping the oil pan to put in a new gasket is a lot easier than dropping the oil pan to replace the oil pan lol. One you have to get the oil pan out of the way for. The other you have to take it away from the crossmember and such.
If it were me, and it was my daily driver (not a show car) I'd just live with it. I dont see it hurting anything.
