Have you trouble shot the problem or are you just changing in hopes of solving your problem? R&R of the pump is straightfoward. Use new gaskets with sealer and sealer on the couple of bolts that go into the water passages. If you are not sure what your problem is , I would recommend troubleshooting until you find it. Swapping parts is an expensive, time consuming way to go.

Are you kidding? (Or, Kitting?) They've put up with me for over five years. You've only been here a little under a month. You've got a long way to go to be as much of a PITA as I am.

As for the overheating, your water pump may or may not be a problem. If you can remove the radiator cap when the engine is cold, then start the engine, since you have no thermostat installed you should be able to see flow in the radiator tank. As the engine RPM is increased, the water pump should draw the level down, and the level should rise again when the RPM is returned to idle. If that is happening, the water pump is probably O.K. If not, the water pump is not moving coolant, either because of a worn or slipping impeller, or because of some other restriction in the cooling system.

The list of possible restrictions or no flow is long, including:
  • Clogged cooling system from severe corrosion;
  • Clogged radiator passages (same reason);
  • Collapsing lower radiator hose;
  • Gasket debris in the cooling system (from a recent repair);
  • Incorrect water pump (reverse rotation or Vortec pump on a "regular" SBC);
  • Incorrect head or intake gaskets;
  • Probably some others I'm overlooking.
Your idea of flushing the cooling system is probably a good one, expecially if it hasn't been done for a few years or 36,000 miles. Either way, the flow check in the radiator should reveal something.
