to change or not to change (oil)

I run valvoline full synthetic 5w-30 and fram double guard filter. i mainly drive on the "highway". I usually change the oil between 2500-3000 miles, but some mechanics told me I was wasteing money and wait for 6,000 miles. That sounds awfully high. I have 113,000 miles on the car.
Also I might be racing tomorrow, I've heard that you shouldn't change oil before a race, which sounds backwards to me.

You should never, ever go past 3000 miles unless you do nothing but pure, I mean pure highway driving with few cold startups in conditions that aren't very dusty.

The auto manufacturers all claim you can go 6000 mi. so that they can publish a lower cost per mile rating for their cars. This could be what he's talking about, though I've never heard a mechanic say anything farther than 3000.

Personally, I change the oil in my LG4 every 3000 unless I check it and the oil looks too dirty.

By the way, I am a state certified mechanic.

You should be able to run 6000 with no problems since you are using synthetic. I'd stop using Fram filters though, they arent very good.

BTW to the above post, 3000 miles on synthetic is a waste of money, its far from dead or contaminated at that point in time.

I agree with madmax. Ditch the Fram immediately!! Use a AC/Delco or a Mobil 1 or a Purolator or a K&N; in fact, just about anything but a Fram. It's the poorest filter on the market.

You should be able to go at least 5000 miles under normal circumstances with synthetic oil.

I third that about the FRAM....Get rid of it.

Your synthetic oil is fine well past 3000 miles, but switch to an AC Delco filter or something, and after 3000 miles, put a new filter on and top off your engine with more of your synthetic of choice.....You're fine going 6000 on a synthetic, but I would stick with the 3000 miles if you are running a conventional oil.

CHECK THIS LINK OUT:....It's old, but it will make you an Anti-FRAM guy in a hurry...

I think I'll switch over to delco filters, BTW that link didn't say anything about how bad they cheap filters are ex: napa.
I work at a tractor dealorship and a mechanic showed me that if you bang a new napa filter on a piece of paper there will be metal shavings. anyone else?
