valve cover/intake manifold interference

When I put my 350 together I had some interference between the lip of the valve covers (tall stamped w/ cork gaskets) and the flange of the intake manifold. The manifold is an OLD polished dual plane and it's similar to the old edelbrock performer. Eager to get the thing together I trimmed the valve covers to fit and of course is leaking badly. I'm thinking cast valve covers without the bend lip around the edge and good rubber gaskets would work but wanted to see if any of you guys have ever ran into this.

Ran into it with both my Moroso stamped valve covers and with my new Moroso cast aluminum valve covers. The "retainer" lip around the perimeter would hit the intake so I had to grind it off, I used stell impregnated rubber gaskets with no problems.

Same with these cast covers, the rubber valve cover gasket is actually wider than the perimeter of the cover itself, so had to do some grinding to get it flush and flat. No biggie and no leaky

I'm finally getting around to fixing this, I'm planning on buying cast covers and good gaskets. Anybody else run into this and come up with any solution? Would doubling the gasket be just asking for leaks?

FWIW, I just replaced my Moroso steel/rubber impregnated VC gaskets last week. After a year and a half of removing valve covers every week to check lash (race thing for MY piece of mind, but not necesarry) they were starting to seep a little bit. All in all for the $32 they should be standard issue when it comes time to replace on any engine, no leakage at all!!!
