Base ignition timing..still probs
Ok, I posted a topic awhile back about base timing the motor... I dont have any problem with timing just finding the right wire on the car thats the EST bypass. My car is any an 84 T/A 305 w/the q jet and the label on the car says to disconnect the 4 wire connector but the only 4 wire connector I see is the dizzy it's self and the car wont stay running with it removed. The peice of crap Haynes manaul says there is a one wire connector usually near the EVAP case but i swear I have looked freaking every where and I cannot find it. The only other 4wire connector I see if near the power brake booster. Is there any other way to disable the EST so I can get this motor timed?

What your doing is correct. You should disconnect the 4 wire connector at the dist. Its only with the later cars that youll have a special est connector since the ecm wont fire the injectors without any reference pulse (need 4 wire connector hooked up).

Then turn the idle speed up to a point where it will stay running; set the timing; and then return the idle screw to where it was when you started, and re-adjust it from there.
