spit fuel

I instaled a new cap and rotar on my z28, the distributor was pulled as well and not marked. I dropped it in and it was pointing to #1 cylinder but am not sure if it was TDC. Anyhow, i went to start my car and it started for a few seconds but timing seems way off. Attempted to start again and the carb spit up some fuel straight up towards the hood. Wondering if it was flooded and does the spitting up of gas have anything to do with the timing being off?

That's typical of the initial timing being way off. Determine the TDC of #1 on the compression/power stroke and get the distributor firing that plug at that position.
