401 stroker anyone have experience with it?
I was reading in one of the car craft magazines, they said they used a bored over 350 (4.060")and a 3.85" stroke and came out with a 401 stroker that turned up to actually 570 hp! I was wondering if anyone has had a motor like that and I was also wondering where you get a 3.85" stroke crank.
thanks for the reply's,
Bryan

The only stroker engine that I know of that you can make with a 350 would be a 383 thats using the 350 block and the 400 crank. Making a 401 out of a 350 would be out of the question becuase (I would think anyway) the stroke would have to be to lng and you might either run out of cylinder or hit the bottom of the oil pan.
If I'm talking out of my @ss someone please correct me.

i submit that the extra 1.25 inch stroke over a 3.75 might have provided an extra 10hp and 15ft/lbs of torque. Use those same parts on a 383 (i would not even go 60over) and you will probably end up with 550 hp also.

camaro guy 99, your way off. they make kits currently up to 415 cubic inch for a 4 inch bore block. 415 being a .060 over bore with 4 inch stroke. the 383 kit is slowly fading away to the 396 kit for 4 inch bore blocks. with the 4.125 small blocks, you can go to 440 cubic inch. also, i don't know why anyone would bother with a 400 crank in a 350 block anymore since the 3.75 stroke cranks are made new for the 350 main journal size. machining the 400 crank to fit a 350 block is pretty much a waste of time and money along with crankshaft stregnth.
it should be pointed out here that just because you build a stroker like that your not going to get 570hp simply by getting the stroker kit.

I'm building a 388 (4.060x3.75) with an eagle kit. Pretty nice kit, I had to clearance the block for the rearmost counterweight, and the bottoms of the bores on the even bank. Then I had to take #2 and #6 out to clearance the tops of the rods near the bolt because it rubbed on the camshaft. More stroke than this would have to be a real PIA trying to make it fit, and I was using 'stroker' hardware like 12 pt rod nuts and it still was a grindfest. Plus the bottoms of the bores are pretty damn close to the water jackets...

As Zippy is alluding, to get those HP numbers, you will need a lot of other changes (heads, cam and intake) besides just displacement.
