what kind of engine do i have? how can i tell? i know it's a 5.7. came with tpi, serpentine belt, came from an 89. is it a L98, or what? i know it's not an LT1. im getting comfortable with my engine... since it's out and all, but what engine is it?
i feel like an idiot for asking, but id like to know.....

That depends. What year is it? Is it a firebird? Trans Am? IROC-Z? RS? Z-28? One of the best ways to find out info. about your car is to type in the VIN on the VIN decoder found on the homepage here. That is a good place to start. The VIN can be found either on your insurance card or on the dash near the front of the drivers side, under the windshield. Don't feel stupid! Everyone has to start somewhere!

SB,
Don't feel so bad - at least you only FEEL like one. Most times, I AM an idiot...
You would only be remiss if you didn't ask a question for which you didn't know the answer. It would be a little like looking at a technical manual but refusing to read the text because you didn't know the procedure.
Your first clue should be the VIN on the vehicle. If the eighth character is an "8", you have a 350 L98. The 305 TPI engines had a code "F" in that space. If the engine is not the original for the vehicle, you can look at the casting numbers on the rear ledge of the case (near the distributor) and decode them at www.mortec.com. There should also be a date code in that area, indicating when the case was cast.
If you do have the 350 (5.7L) and it has the TPI, it's agood bet it was an L98 unless someine converted the engine to TPI.
