2 questions for you guys
my first question is about engine run on. why cant i get rid of it?? i have a carbed 383 that 25% of the time when i shut it off it like to spit and sputter a little while and then shut off. i have double checked timing and reset all the valves. i dont know what makes it run on like that.
my second question is what is the black crap that comes out of the exhaust and on to the garage floor? i have never seen the car smoke before but for some reason there is black stuff on the floor by the exhaust tips where i start it up each morning.

try adjusting the carb the black stuff on the floor is most likely condensation from the combustion process and a rich carb.

As far as your engine's run-on problem(dieseling), I'd try using a higher octane fuel. I had a carbed camaro that didn't like regular gas(87 octane or so). I had the same problem until I went to higher octane fuel. What octane fuel do you use? What is your engine's compression ratio?
dieseling is usually due to a rich carb and maybe a vaccuum leak.
