thermostat question
i heard that some guys drill small holes in their thermostats to improve the flow of the coolant..does it actually help keep your car cooler? or is it all a bunch of b.s.?
Whether or not it helps to keep the car cooler is ont a proven point, but what it can do is allow a small amount of the coolant flow constantly to the radiator. This will presumably allow the thermostat to open a littl sooner than would be otherwise. Robertshaw used to have a small weep hole in many of their thermostats, with a small floating surge valve in the hole. Their theory was the same.
The holes can also help expell air from the cooling system when it is filled, or if it may become low for whatever reason. Personally, I would think that a single hole wouls serve the function almost as well as several.
