No, it will not produce a code, and yes, you will be just fine without it, except for increased emissions.

I don't mean to hijack your thread but my 88 IROC runs way way way too rich and now it seems to not want to run at all. The entire AIR system is missing and I've heard that putting one on will make the car run better. 2 problems with that 1) finding one and 2) when I come across one its way too expensive. The car ran great for 2 years and after I got it out of storage this spring its been running like ****. I've already replaced the secondary ignition system because it was skipping badly. The car ran well for a week then it started to skip again, just not as often. I bought the car and it was already modded, still not sure what is in there and I don't have the time to dig in and look around. More recently its been having issues starting hot. I have to floor the gas to get it to start and of course smoke pours out of the exhaust. Cold starting isn't much of a problem, seems to fire up with ease. When she's hot she just turns over and over and over. Anyone with any suggestions? I'll take any help I can get at this point. Thanks

I forgot to mention the way it idles. It idles in park and in drive at about 1100 rpm, when before it would be around 750-800 rpm.

Some TPi set-ups rely on the AIR to function correctly. There is a sticky in the exhaust forum that goes into detail on this matter. TBI vehicles are not sensitive to this at all. You should be able to get a complete AIR system out of a junk yard for next to nothing. I am sure you could get a set-up here in the wanted section of the classifieds for next to free. Lots of TGO people have these systems laying in our garage taking up space.

Everything seems to point to either the emissions system or the fuel system, unless I'm looking at this all wrong. I read the stick on the AIR system and I don't think that's causing my problem. When I register my car this year I have to have the AIR system in place but it doesn't have to work....only has to appear to be functional. How stupid is that???? You've gotta love stupid laws. Well the car runs rich, idles high, seems like its only done this since I took it out of storage. I'm not sure what I need to do. I do know the injectors are either 36 or 42# per hour. All I was told is that they're big. Could they just be dumping too much fuel in, causing the car to smell really rich? I'm not really a "car guy" I love to drive my car but know next to nothing about it to be totally honest. Any suggestions will help. Thanks gang.

Your injectors are way too big unless you have a radical engine. Likely the root of all your problems.
