Off-Topic '99 Grand Am Question

Moderators, feel free to close this topic if you want, but I figured that I might as well ask this here; couldn't hurt I guess...

In addition to my '86 IROC, I also own a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am GT. For some reason, the driver's side door locks itself randomly. I leave the car unlocked in the garage, and sometimes when I go to open the door it is locked. I have taken it to the dealership but they can't seem to fix it. I'm thinking that it might be an ECM or wiring problem... any ideas?

I was flipping thru the channels on TV a minute ago, and the movie "Christine" was on TBS -- maybe a coincidence?

It has keyless entry right? There may be a problem with it. Have you ever used a slim jim to open the door? Have you ever had a gremlin infestation?

I know GM had a lot of problems w/ Grand Am, so your not alone.

It sounds like a problem w/ the RFA Module (Remote Function Actuation). I think the key is that you said only the drivers door is locking. If you notice when you kit "unlock" w/ your keyless entry transmitter (key fob) only the drivers door unlocks, and if you hit it again, they all unlock, but if you hit lock, they all lock the first time. Thats how it should work, but it shows the RFA module has control of the drivers door by itself only in the unlock mode, so if its locking by itself, that rules out any "stray" radio signals activating the RFA module, and really, the only thing left is the module. Unfortunatly, GM doesn't like paying for repairs under warranty based on theories and guesses, so unless the technician can find some hard evidence of what failed, he doesn't really have a choice. I hope you get it fixed eventually.

Thanks GMTech, I'll tell the technician about that module... maybe he can figure out if it is defective, now that he has a place to look.
