Damn, I feel dumb...

My boyfriend (LottaBallsCamaro) and I have been posting a lot of messages over the past few months about my car detonating. Well, we finally figured out what it was a few weeks ago.......it was me. I was babying it too much and it was getting a lot of carbon buildup. We had tried everything to stop it: higher octane gas, new IAC, 2 new O2 sensors, cooler plugs (those stupid Splitfires didn't help), new ignition module, thought about a new knock sensor.......when this whole time it was me I feel so stupid! Thanks everyone for trying to help us!

MLBC,

Thank you for your testimonial. I've been saying all along that th eSplitfires, +4's, etc. may not be a BAD plug, but they are no better or more effective than the "standard" design spark plug. Almost a hundred years of design development have been invested in spark plug design, and the multi electrode plugs that first surfaced in the 1920's proved that one is as good as several.

As for the carbon buildup, excessive buildup can occur from constant low speed driving, just like glazing can occur from constant high speed driving. However, it is very important to realize that "opening it up" is not a bad thing, as long as these conditions are satisfied:

1. It's safe. That means traffic, pedestrians, static objects (like curves) and YOU are taken into consideration when driving hard;

2. It's legal - or at least almost. Somewhat like the first rule, but even if it's safe to drive the car harder than normal, cops don't always see it that way;

3. The car is in good mechanical condition and has been fully warmed. You can doo a lot of engine, transmission, and differential damage by accelerating hard on a cold engine with cold oil, cold transmission, and before the axle bearings have been splashed with oil adequately. The damage is cumulative, so it may not wear out right away, but it will wear out sooner.

By the way - Welcome aboard!

Welcome MLBC! Glad you figured out the problem with the car. Now go out and burn the tires! LOL
Take care

water injection does wonders for carbon buildup,especially in the form of steam. easy fabrication
