testing my ecm by using a known good one?

Where could I come across a ECM for my 86 305 tpi so i could just swap it out real quick and test it to see if its the ecm wigging out? Would a junkyard let me do that if i did it right there on the spot with them watching?? thanks!

They won't take stuff back, especially electronic parts. They shouldn't charge you more than $20-25 for a good used one. You can buy a remanufactured new one for about $60 from most parts stores.

In either case you'll need to swap your existing chip into the new ECM before you install it.

Remember that the same ECM used in the Camaro was used in a ZILLION other GM cars- Buick Regals, Pontiac Grand Ams, Chevy Cavaliers, etc, etc. It's the same ECM but with different chips in it- that's why you always need to swap your chip over.

Salvage yards have something called a "Hollander Interchange Manual" that lets them cross-reference across all different makes and models. Don't be surprised if the ECM they hand across the counter got yanked out of a GM car other than a Camaro! Swap your chip in and you'll be good to go.

Update on my car is this. Turns out the ECM wasn't bad, I had the part's guys were I work order me one and I tired it and it didn't fix my problem. I then had my dad, who is a electronic technician come check it out cause I was at wits end, and he found all sorts of wiring messed up from an aftermarket alarm system, and also the new fuel pump relay I had was bad. Got it all wired back up right like it was originally, threw a new fuel pump relay in it, and now purrs like a kitten! WOOOT!!! Thanks for your help though guys!!
