stroker? or not
stroker? or not
ok, there is a swap meet coming up, and i am lookin to load up on some goodies. I have a 82 trans 305 H/O and am curenttly to take a part the block and install a 350 crank. I have heard people saying the block is no good, i what can go wrong with sub 450 horse use ?
Also i need to know what needs to be done to the block, i am hoping on installin 30 over forged pistons and a performance crank?a crank kit. I am not sure what difference there is in piston rings, but i am sure the bore is the same so everything should work, assuming i dont get a 4-bolt main block.and what about the heads, how do i identify what kind of heads i got/chamber size flow capability and valve size, do u think that upgrade to different heads would be nesscessary, what kind of heads should i look for ?stock heads not performances heads, remember i am on a budget-of course i am going to get a intake and carb, what models will fit without giving me and hood clearence problems. what kind of cam should i go with, i am looking for about 350-400 horse power, and i dont want a super lopey idle, just a mild to mid. obivously i need a different tranny, will a chevy turbo 350 fit as a direct bolt in or what do i need to do to do something like that, how would i run true duel exhaust or is it not possible???/
let me know any help would be thanked

Let's take it from the top. There's no such thing a a 82 HO car; the L69 wasn't introduced until 83. SO if you still have its original motor it's the LG4. Although, if you plan on boring it and all that, you'll have to get new pistons, so that doesn't matter much; the heads are the same anyway.
OK... you're going to take apart your 305 block and put a 350 crank in it.... your new displacement will be {drum roll please} 305! The 305 and 350 have the same stroke, 3.48"; and usully even are built from the same crank casting (442).
Your heads are 14014416; they're 58cc chambers, and have 1.84" and 1.5" valves. They are one of the best 305 heads, which isn't saying a whole lot.
So what would you really like to do? 350 HP is not too tough to get out of a 350, 400 isn't even that hard; but to get there with a 305... I don't know about that.

ok, i am sorry, i am not up to dat on chevy motors, or maybe its that i really dont care for them but i though that it was the stroke that was different on a 305 and a 350, maybe i should of done some research before i said anything. Is it possible that the block can be bored out that much to fit 350 pistons, (i think either around 70 or 80 over). I never saw the guts to a chevy to be honest with u,will the water jackets be to thin? will the heads still work and operate with out being over compressed(too much compression) i am not sure of anything, personally i am a oldsmobile. this is my friends car we are talking about, it is a 82, and it has a 305 ho in it, well at least all the stickers say that, some one could've put it on there but why would they? is it worth even trying to do this or should i find a 350 that needs rebuilding?
also i need to know about hood clearence on certain intakes thanx

82 cars did not come with the HO motor, period. It wasn't available until about Feb or Mar of 83, in 83 model cars. Look at the 8th digit of the VIN, it will tell you what engine it has.
Rule #1 of "customizing" cars: Stickers are cheaper than parts.
No, a 305 cannot be bored out to 350 bore. 305 bore is 3.736"; 350 bore is 4.000". 305s usually can't even go .060" over, let alone .260" over.
A 350 would bolt right in. If you are (or your friend is) going to go to the trouble and expense of boring something and buying pistons for it, it would make a whole lot more sense to sink the money into a 350 than a 305. The core is probably less than $200; if 45 cubic inches are $200 more on top of a $2000 job, I can't think of any possible way to get power more economically than that.

To be fair, in '82 they did have the 165 horse LU5 cross-fire 305. It wasn't called "HO", but it was the higher-output version available that year.

Well, as much as I like my 305 I think that it would make too much sense for you to pull it out. If you are on a budget then go 350, a 383 would be nice but the machine work gets expensive. Even a weakly built 350 will out perform all but the best 305's. The good thing about chevy 350's is that they are very abundant...so you can pick them up used pretty cheap and rebuild. Get a cam and youll be set. Like they say "there's no replacement for displacement". That said a 400 would be even better.
