Where is my oil going???

I'm going thru about a quart every week or so. Fresh rebuild, I checked all the plugs and none are wet. It doesn't smoke or leak anywhere. I'm stuck on this one. Help. Thanks.

Is your coolant overflowing? I had a customer tell me that his oil was "evaporating" once, and after I got him to change to mobil 1 it no longer happened.

It's a pretty new motor. I got about 4000 miles on it maybe. I'll give the Mobil One a try. how long does it take for rings to seat? I wouldn't think it would take 4000 miles to seat. Thanks for the help.

How many miles does it take to use up a quart? I had a rebuilt 350 in the '57 that used a quart every 400-500 miles and it did not smoke or foul the plugs. I finally determined the .030 cylinders had .040 oil control rings on it (.060 gap!).

If the rings have not seated, Mobil 1 isn't going to help that situation - Bon Ami would, though. But, by 4000 miles, they're either seated or they never will.

What is Bon Ami? Isn't that a powder cleaner like Comet? Well if it's not smoking, and my plugs are dry then what's the deal? I go thru a quart about every couple hundred miles or so. It seems to go pretty quick. If I do a compression check on it. What should the pressure be in the cylinders? And what's a safe difference in pressure between cylinders, cause I know they all won't read the same I'm sure. Thanks.

I had good compression (for a dished-piston engine), about 135. The compression rings were the correct size, only the oil control were wrong.

Do the check and see what you've got.

Oil can also come in around the intake port gaskets. Was anything decked/shaved?

Bon Ami is a cleaning powder. Very fine. Old circle track racer's trick to break the engine in quick after a rebuild before racing it. My point was just that synthetic oil will reduce wear, and therefore reduce ring break-in (if that's your problem, which it probably isn't).
