burning oil
i have a 91 camaro rs with the 305 and ever since i changed my oil, i put in Pennzoil 5w-30 oil. now there is an oil smoke cloud coming out my exhaust when i hit the gas. a friend told me that i should put 10w-30 oil in older cars. i have also put in some engine restore, did not improve it.

What is the mileage on the engine? Leaky valve seals will cause a good puff on start up, worn rings/poorly sealin rings will cause a nice puff everytime ya put the pedal to the floor. Most likely a combo of the 2. 10w-40 wont hurt anything if your tolerances are loose. What is your oil pressure at when idling? Dont go by the factory gauge hook up a reliable aftermarket one.

it has 75000 miles on it. so if i run 10w-40 would that slow down my oil from burning? the stock one says about 30, thats the only one i have to go by.

Un less it's synthetic GM said, back in the early 70s not to use 10W40. 10W30 will be fine. It's probably valve seals as already stated.

With the correct tools, valve seals are pretty easy, if time consuming. Make sure you have several hours to do this. I found that the two-arm, screw type valve spring compressor worked pretty good, (if installed correctly..... don't ask) and a fitting that you can screw into the sparkplug hole to pressurize the cylinder while pulling the springs. (to keep the valves closed while changing seals.) A magnetic pickup tool is great for getting the keepers out.
The cool little clips to put over your rockers, so you can adjust valves with the engine running (without making too much of a mess) are nice to have as well.
