Could this be??????
My engine surges at high rpms. could it be related to a faulty fuel pump?

Possibly. Or it could be ignition related.
When was the last time you did a tune up (including PCV valve, and O2 sensor, and fuel filter)?
Do you have a fuel pressure gauge? If not, you may want to invest in one, they come in handy very often when something starts acting up with the car

I'd suggest purchasing, or renting a fuel pressure gauge then.
I'd hate to see you spend 150 dollars, spend an entire weekend pulling the rear end and dropping the gas tank to replace the fuel pump, to find out that it wasnt the problem when you could have bought a fuel pressure gauge for probably less than 50 (i got a good one that cost me about 50 even) and would give you a good accurate account of what is actually going wrong with your car.
