In the newest issue of camaro prfoemwrs there is a 95 LT1 with a superchager that weighs 3,590pds with driver. Then there is a 98' Z28 with a turbo that has a race weight of 3880pds. Both cars have Ttops and I know the 98' has a 6point rollcage, but I'm sure the 95 has one to. Icant figure out why the 98' weighs so damn much. I cant imagine that the facelift weighs 400pds, as the LS1 probably weighs 150pds. less.

 

Race weight usually means how much it weighs going down the track. Driver, fuel etc. If you know how much weight the engine is trying to move, you can calculate how much rear wheel HP there is from the 1/4 mile mph.

So why does the 98 weigh so much more???

 

Maybe the '98 is "loaded" power seats weight a ton, leather, A/C, stereo? 3,500# seems a little light for a loaded '95 with a supercharger, maybe he pulled the padding.

 

Also, are they both autos or sticks? Sticks usually weight 50-75# less, different wheels- +/- 20#, maybe the '95 has a chromemoly cage and the '98 has a mild steel cage that is overbuilt, maybe its a 12 point.

The '95 could have racing seats (10# vs. 30#).

It all adds up.

 

I helped with tech and ran the scales at the NFRA race last weekend at Beech Bend, Kentucky.

Most of the 4th gens weighed in around 3500 to 3700 pounds (with driver). Most had roll bars or full cages (depending on times).

HOWEVER, there were several that were between 3400 and 3500 pounds.

There were a couple that had to ADD weight to get to the 3300 pound (with driver) minimum!
