Smogged the beast...failed visual...
Hey guys just got my 86 iroc back from the shop and took it to get smogged yesterday. everything went fine but i failed visual on my air cleaner. i had the l69 air cleaner without the hoses and scoops (forgot to put the stock one back on) so it failed because the guy said i was was missing the heat stove and tube. so i put my stock right sided air cleaner assembly and my question is how the hell does this thing hook up when u got aftermarket headers( hooker 2055's)? does it hook up to the manifold like the package says so should i hook it up the headers itself or whats the deal? its been a long *** day and i knoe im askin a stupid question but i just got my car after a month of sittin in the shop hoping everything would be fine then this comes up...well at least she sounds and runs like a champ *** i hate these freakin smog ****'s! thanks guys!
it's a scam... my car passed the test and smog test.. but also failed because the guy said that the timing marks on the harmonic balancer were off beyond the allowable 3 degrees. Anybody that knows mechanics KNOWS that thy 2 piece gel balancer will warp and the marks will move out of align..thus displaying an incorrect reading.
Scam??? He made reference that the shop NEXT door could do the repair... a repair that would cost $140 dollars... Cal law dictates that Smog Only stations ARE ALLOWED TO recommend the assistance of ANY particular shop. This is to protect against fraud. So it appears that this A@@ violated the LAW. I just had my step dad (who's a mechanic) take the f#cking car to the same guy and he passed IT WITHOUT THE HASSLING about the timing marks. HOW'S THAT FOR BEING F#CKED!!!

I'm not even going to get into the "scam" bs
... Did you take it to a test only smog station? They can't do any repairs or adjustments, that's left for another shop or yourself to do. Every bit of the stock emissions equipment has to be on the car and working properly. Yeah it's lame that you have to have that little stove pipe but it's part of the visual check. So as long as you find a way to connect that stove pipe to a primary on your header and run it up to the air cleaner, you should be good.

PRIMARY thats the word i was lookin for...but yea i figured it out and hooked it all up...my car seems to idle a lil bit higher and warm up faster with this thing on....the idle is still normal though so its cool im just gonna remove it once i pass my test lol...

If you take a look at Edelbrock headers for the TBI/305 apps, they have a "heattube" that wraps around one of the primary tubes for the stovepipe to connect too.
I just put a set of SLP's on a '91 RS, made my own based on what the Ebrock looked like out of a piece of sheetmetal and conduit that fit the stovepipe, and it did pass the visual.

Get a pice of metal pipe the correct size to fit with the flex hose. Cut it about 4-5" long. One side you do a straight-across cut. The other side you cut at a 45* angle. The stright-cut side will receive the flexible hose, the 45* cut side will face towards the header primary tube to draw air over it and heat it up. Weld a couple of little "tabs" on the 45* cut side. Use some hose clamps to hold this tube on to one of the header primary tubes, using the "tabs" as the thing that the hose clamps grab onto to hold it to the header tube. Ta Da!- hot air hose attachement point.
