Swapping IROC Rear (Disc to Disc) into my 87 with Drums
Swapping IROC Rear (Disc to Disc) into my 87 with Drums
OK, in my quest to find a 4th gen rear, I came across a guy who has 2 3rd gen IROCs (Both with discs out back). Now, if I wanted to put one of those onto my 87 Z (Complete from disc to disc), would it be a straight bolt on (Except for the proportioning valve and master cylinder)?
4th gen rears are hard to find around here, so when I stumbled onto the IROC one's I thought I'd take a look. The guy is going to count the teeth this weekend and get back to me (With price too). What do you guys think (Right now I have 2.73's)?

That swap would be ok for a 3:23 rear, the disc will be allright. If you can wait, I would look for a 89 or later rear. These have
a very improved disc system(11.655 rotors and two piston Alum PBR calipers) Axle ratios
are limited with the most common being 2:73&3:23 ten bolt and 2:77&3:27 nine bolt with both having Possi. No big problem installing. Just something to think about and
good luck.

Hopefully the guy will get back to me, and let me know the condition/year/gearing/price for the IROC rear end's.
So with the most common being 3.2x ratios, would it be a worthwhile upgrade from 2.73? or should I hold out for 3.42 (Or 4th gen)?

It depends on what you want, Brakes or Gears.
When I had to change my rear (possi shot) I thought Wow! Disc's and gears. However: these things are getting rare, so take your pick(2:77's are not that bad). Fourth Gen
rears I don't know, for one they are 4" wider
and your wheels will not fit. Your choice.
3:42's are the rarest!

I want gears, but at the price I was quoted (400-500 Canadian) installed, I figure getting another rear would be better (Since I can install that myself too). The big brakes/posi is just a bonus,at least that's the way I'm looking at it...
Of course, I'm kind of ignoring the fact that the rear I get could need rebuilding too....
