no spark
Just did a minor tune up 87 irocz 305 carbed.
New plugs, wires, rotor, dist.cap, and coil. I got it all put back together and would not start, I'm not getting any spark? When i was taking off the oid dist cap one of my buddys moved the cap and mabye offset the timming. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

always double check your work when you have a problem that "appeared" after you did some work. this is assuming the car was running before the tune up was performed. you might wanna try the old coil just in case to rule out or condemn the new coil. "offsetting" the timing would make the car harder to start or not start at all but you would be getting spark. what kind of cap/coil setup is it? is it the externally mounted coil. if so make sure the wire coming from the coil is connected to the middle post on the dist cap. i have made that mistake once before. just make sure that all connections to the ign coil are clean and secure.

The cap is accell and the coil is the factory replacement from advanced auto. The car ran before i did any work. When i took the old coil into the store they tried to test it with a volt meter but they said it's hard to get a accurate reading. Would the car start if any of the plug wires got put on the wrong plug? Thanks for the quick responce.

well if you get a couple (2) wires on the wrong cylinders it might start. but more than 2 i strongly doubt it. would know because i got the #6 and #8 wires mixed up and it did start but it did have a bad idle and knew something was wrong obviously. i remembered messing with those plug wirews so i switched them out and volia it worked great again. as for the coil did you try putting the old one back in and trying to recheck for spark? it's worth a shot.

Hold the coil wire about 1/4 inch away from a good engine ground(keep away from any fuel!) I like to use plastic insulated pliers to do this too. Then have somebody turn the motor over, does it spark? If so the problems in your cap or rotor.
If not get a 12v test light. Hook it between the - side of the coil and ground. Now crank the engine over again. It should flicker or flash. If its on steady than you probably have a bad ignition module or distributor pickup. If it doesnt come on at all check the + side of the coil to see if there is power when the keys on. If it doesnt light there you have a problem with the ignition switch, wiring, fuse link or something of that nature.

I found out the problem! I had to change the whole distibutor, I turned the motor over and there it was. ( SPARK ). Thanks to all of the guys who helped, the info was very usefull.
