Of course you can replace it. You have to take the gear off the bottom, pull the dist. shaft, and then theres a clip you will have to break to get to the pickup on the 88-up, I havent been in the earlier ones in so long I cant remember if it has the same sorta clip but it probably does.

There is a pressed in pin that you need to pop out of the gear to get it off, but the rest is pretty easy... at least on pre-88 HEIs

Just thought I'd mention that the distributor has to come out as the first step.
My car has a pre-88 set up; I didn't have to break any clip to change the pick up.

88 IROC with cobbled together (not by me)drivetrain, 86 (?) TPI unit on an '83 305,CE subframe connectors, Edelbrock strut tower brace, polygraphite bushings all around...it handles like a dream, but man is it hard to push!!

To replace the pickup.
remove distributor.
With flat punuch, or roll pin punch, remove roll pin. and pull the gear off.
Gently work the shaft out, it's probably nice and scummy.
remove the little snap ring on the top. and the bolts holding it in.
wiggle it off.

It's always SOMETHING

Cool guys thanks.
I was told before that it was better just to replace the distributor before than to screw with that..
Only reason why I ask is that on my girlfriend 79 Z everthing in the distributor was replace except fer that.. Now the tach is jumping all over the place. Ya know if it isnt one thing it is another lol
