Knocking and ticking?

My bro's car just started making some really odd noises.

On his way home yesterday he said he heard a really bad knocking sound, he said he could feel an obvious drop in power. This morning we fired up the car and it didn't make the noise right away. After running the car about five miles we heard it knocking around 1k rpm's. Once this started we took it straight home where it made a ticking noise around 1k rpm's.

Idea's?

Sounds like a spun bearing. How does it sound idling? How about when you rev it in neutral? How does the low end torque feel?
