Talkin Fuel Pressure...

What are the adverse effects of running to rich.... Too lean?? Over short or long periods of time? How does the car tend to perform. Im a 17 year old still learning, weve finished my 383 stroker and Im trying to decide where to adjust the fuel pressure. The car seems to be running way rich, especially before replacing the regulator. The regulator's vacuum fitting had broken off, creating accesively high fuel pressure as well as a vacuum leak Now Ive replace the regulator (today) And the car runs much much stonger but after the car got warm and I drove it for awhile it seemed to act up a bit. The idle gets really lumpy the whole car will really start to shake after a lengthy idle... Whats more, when I FIRST start the car, it REALLY wants to die, I usually give it some gas and the thing stays awake, but If I rev the thing in park or neutral it will most positively stall (did before the new regulator that is) Also after idleing under medium acceleration between 1000-2000 rpm the car is really sluggish Ill have steady throttle but it will bogg and then suddenly pick up where it should have been throttle wise.... Im gonna need a chip soon, but Im trying to figure out whats going on...

116,

Running rich can cause excessive carbon deposits, excessive emissions, wastes fuel, and can eventually clog a cat converter. There is no real immediate danger from running rich, but it should be repaired.

Running lean is a different story. Lean engines run very hot, tend to create just as many emissions, and can burn piston tops, valves, spark plugs, gaskets, etc. Inaddition, running lean under heavy loads contributes to detonation, which can blow a hole through the top of a piston or crack aluminum heads at the valve seat areas. Valves burn, oil cokes on the rings, and the engine life can be severely reduced. That condition requires almost immediate attention.

I too am a 17 year old trying to learn about this stuff. My 305TPI has the EXACT same symptoms to the point. So if somebody could help us out that would be great.

Also you said that changing the regulator fixed the problem, or did I just read your post wrong?

Would the conditions I mentioned be a lean or rich condition? I figure its rich because I can smell the fuel after running the motor for awhile plus I play with the adj regulator to increase the fuel pressure or adjust it. The car ran just as bad when I had a broke Adj regulator and there was a vacuum leak (according to Crane causign excessivly high pressure)..... Can anyone offer suggestions... Im going to buy some software and cables to work with my laptop soon Im sure that could help but still....
