modification insurance?

I was wondering how many of you report major mods to the insurance company so they can be covered. Especially with things like engine and tranny rebuilds. If you completly rebuild your engine with performance parts should you tell the insurance company or not? If anyone has repoted these things, did it drastically change your rates? Or do they even allow you to cover mods like that?

Basically, insurance companies will look at any performance modification you make to your car as a reason to increase your premiums. Furthermore, if it comes time to collect on a policy they can cite depreciation (loss of value due to use) as a method of lowering their payment. You can always buy separate or additional insurance to cover the extra value, but is the extra cost really worth it?

I never report any mods to my insurance company, and when my 85 z was stolen in march and never recovered they gave me $ for the car and for a lot of the mods I had done. So why pay more when there are no real benefits?
