surface rust on cylinder walls

ok, i pulled my heads off tonight, and the oil pan to see what damage the blown head gaskets did. (at least i assume that was the problem)

from what i can see... i have surface rust on the cylinder walls (as far down as the piston goes. when i pulled the oil pan, their was no oil/coolant sludge (oil shake).

now, the question i have is this... are they gonna need to go anything the the cylender walls because of the rust, or are they ok?

im gonna have them clean and check the mounting surfaces of the heads, block, pessure test the heads, and put the oil pan back on, with a new gasket. i could prolly put the oil pan gasket on myself, but i want to make sure its done right... i dont really think i could handle another big disapointment and having to pull the engine again.

thanx for the help you guys can give

jon

I would get some steel wool or 800 grit emery cloth and lightly knock it down. You might rotate the motor to get the piston down below the bad spot. But it should be ok.. Just lube the cylinder back and close it up to outside air.

Try cleaning the surface rust off with a rag and tranny fluid....you'll be amazed.

If you rehone the pistons would have to come out. not worth the trouble. Try what paul said.. also use some brake cleaner. If you can turn the motor upside down on an engine stand before trying to sand the stuff down. IT will just go down into the rings otherwise probably do more damage than it would just staying there.

If the cylinder is pitted then you will need to machine to clean it up.. otherwise i would just run it.

ok, before i take it to the shop, ill try it... the motor is already upside down on the stand... pulled off the oilpan to make sure their was no oil shake in the bottom end... everything looked clean.

ill try the break cleaner and a rag tomarrow before i take it in, or ill take it in a day later.

i really hope this is the last time i gotta pull the engine in a long time... hopefully my car will hit the pavement before the snow does.... it would be the first time i drive it in about 9 months...

thanx guys, if their are any more ideas, keep em posted....

oh, afte i use the break cleaner, should i put oil on the walls after that? so they dont rust over again?

thanx

I would. a real light coat of something and then a bag over it. Especially if you will be transporting it.

Heck, if it's already on the stand, why not tear it down the rest of the way and hone it?

Originally I figured you were asking the question because the engine was in the car.

because i cant afford the money to have the shop do that... and if i tear it all the way down, i might as well get the whole engine rebuilt.. if i do that, i might as well get high perf parts, and stroke it out... and i know my t5 aint gonna be happy with that... so then i gotta save up for a t-56 or some other 6-speed.

id rather get a 6-speed before i blow the 5.

if money wasnt a factor, i wouldnt have any problem with it.

thanx again for the help
