Distributor

I'm at the point now [all emmision gear gone] where my Edelbrock carb and manifold are fitted.
Now of course i realise, i need a distributor and coil with suitable vacumn advance. At the moment i'm still running the standard distributor.
Can someone recommend one that will go straight into a 305, with not too much wiring to change, and i'm not going into competition with it, so i dont want to spend stupid money.
I take it then you can unplug the ecu?
And where is the best place to wire the new distributor from.
Thanks in advance.

MSD is probably the most commonly used. Accel, Mallory, etc are also available. I have used a Mallory on my Caprice with no issues.

All non-cc distributors wire up the same, as long as you don't get one that is intended for an ignition box.

They just require a 12v+ hot source and the tach wire.

Thanks, ive heard of Mallory and Accel but not MSD.
Had a browse of e bay and found this:

Mallory 262-454 CHEVY HEI DISTRIBUTOR 8548201C

Tach Drive: No
Gear Material: Iron
Computer Controlled: No
Cylinder Rotation: Right Hand
Helix Rotation: Standard
Housing Material: Billet Aluminum
Housing Finish: Natural
Cap Style: HEI/ Male
Coil Included
Advance Type: Vacuum and Mechanical
Trigger Style: Magnetic

Now does no tach drive mean no mechanical tach drive, or no connection for electric tachs?
Would be handy as it seems fairly in-expensive at $144.

Tach drive would be a cable driven tachometer.

MSD is probably the most largely known aftermarket ignition company in existance. Mallory, like I said, worked fine for me, and was a cost-effective alternative to MSD. The part number you list looks exactly like the one I had. The 85 series, though, I guess, is a newer version, but I would expect it to be much of the same.

Thanks for the fast replies, this has to be a quick learning curve for me.
Summer is almost at an end [if it started at all ] and i'm past wanting to work on my own cars during winter, that, and its booked in to be painted 14th of september, so if i can get it into a decent running mode before then, i'm a happy bunny.
