Tune Up Question
Tune Up Question
I have a question on how to do a tune-up on a 87 Z28 (LO3) with a 305 TBI. Anybody have any tricks on changing the spark plugs? Chevy wants $400 to do a tune-up, I was hoping with some advice from you guys I could do it myself and save some cash for performance mods. Any info is appreciated.
There's two spark plugs that can easily be removed from the top, and they're the front most two on the driver's side. Removing the air filter tubing makes them easier to get to.
The other six I got to pretty easily from the bottom of the car.
The tools I used were a pivoting head ratchet, a small extension, and a spark plug socket. If you don't have a pivoting head ratchet, a u-joint will do, but they're a bit awkward at times.
Also, do them one at a time. That way it's a lot harder to mess up the order of the wires.

use ac delco plugs, you can reach 6 from the top, and the other two from the bottem. don't over tighten them, and make sure to gap them correctly. the tools he mentioned should do just fine. also, you better check with GM cause they must be including alot more stuff for that price?

Dang, 400 bucks for a simple spark plug change! Wow.
Anyways, yeah like those guys said about the spark plugs is right. Also, how many miles is on ur car? might want to change ur fuel filter as well. It isn't to hard at all. Just take off ur gas cap to relieve the pressure and its right under the driver side door. And after that fill up ur car and run some injector cleaner thru the fuel system. I don't know if u planned on changing ur wires and cap/rotor too with ur tune up but it wouldn't hurt if u have around 80,000 miles and still have the factory wires and cap/rotor on there. Just a thought.
At my site it gives instructions on how to change all of that in the ignition part of the modeval site. Good luck.

If you have acces to a lift it will make the job a whole lot easier. I found it easier getting them form the bottom using the lift.
$400 for the EGR, plugs and a fuel filter. Wow that is alot. At the shop I work part time at that would be probably about a $200 - $250 job. A complete tune up with plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, oil change, grease suspension and the EGR would be around $400 maybe more.

That is rather expensive. Fuel filter's what, 10 bucks? Spark plugs 10 bucks for a set (around there), EGR valve is 80 dollars or so (that I recommend getting from the dealer instead of from autozone or some other place)... SO that's 100 bucks for parts, 300 for labor? That's ridiculous.
